Mlle Yvonne Daunt was a dancer in the Paris Opera Ballet, Theatre Garnier from 1918 to the mid to late 1920s. She became an étoile and subsequently rose to the rank of Prémiere Danseuse. Although classically trained, she had also studied the Dalcroze method and with modern dance pioneers such as Isadora Duncan.
As one of the first contemporary dancers to appear at the Paris Opera Ballet , her technique and method of dance (bare feet) caused significant interest and strongly held opinions by the commentators on the ballet and dance.
Sybella Blencowe, Yvonne Daunt's niece had been researching the life of this amazing pioneer of modern dance, and decided to commission a short dance work in memory of her Aunt. Sybella, a dancer herself decided the work would not only form a tribute to Yvonne but also support a young choreographer and provide an opportunity to showcase the work.
In early 2009 she commissioned Brisbane choreographer and dancer Zaimon Vilmanis to create a work in tribute to Yvonne, evoking elements of her life, her art and her place in the cultural movements of her day.
The work was premiered in Adelaide on Sunday 5 July 2009 performed by Zaimon Vilmanis and Lizzie Vilmanis. Two other artists, choreographer and dancer Anna Kingston, and concert pianist Michael Seifried will also perform that afternoon.
